Correspondence with the Ministry of Education concerning HIV/AIDS education curriculum

CFUW Ontario Council is very concerned about the potential closure of the First Nations Technical Institute on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, near Belleville, ON. A letter has been sent to the Premier.

Nov. 7, 2007

Wendy Taylor, Chair, Standing Committee on Education, sent a letter to the Hon. Kathleen Wynne concerning the national resolution, sponsored by CFUW North Bay, promoting the development and implementation of age-appropriate HIV/AIDS education curricula.

The resolution as passed at the National AGM, July 2007 states:

RESOLVED, That the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) promote the development and implementation of age-appropriate HIV/AIDS education curricula in each province and territory beginning at grade one and continuing at each grade level to encompass the social, cultural, health and science studies of this disease; and

RESOLVED, That the CFUW urge the federal, provincial and territorial governments of Canada to ensure sufficient funding provisions are available for teacher training and resource material for HIV/AIDS curriculum development and implementation.

Wendy Taylor, Chair, Standing Committee on Education sent a letter to the Hon. Kathleen Wynne commending the McGuinty Government for supporting the “Roots of Empathy” program through the generous contribution of $700,000.00.

A letter is sent to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities commending the Ontario Government on the substantial investment made to the “Pathways to Education” program in Regent Park. The Letter
