Green Energy: Is a Future without Fossil Fuels Viable?
Wind power, solar power, renewable energy, oil sands, pipeline construction. Increasingly we are concerned about the sustainability and environmental impact of fossil fuels. Producing clean, sustainable power in substantial quantities from renewable energy sources is being discussed and debated. But do we understand the environmental and economic implications of this change? Do we understand what renewable energy is and what it will mean to us? Can we see a future without fossil fuels?
Morning Keynote Presentation: Understanding Renewable Energy:
Peter Love, Research Fellow at Ryerson Centre for Urban Energy-Hydro One will present an overview of what the principal types of renewable energy are, how they work, what are Ontario’s and Canada’s positions, policies and programs on renewable energy.
Afternoon Panel Discussion: Environmental, Economic and Societal Impacts
Three experts will present their perspectives of the economic, environmental and societal impact of incorporating renewable energy into a sustainable energy future for Canada.
Peter Love is an adjunct professor at York University in the Faculty of Environmental and was the first president of Energy Services Association of Canada, promoting government policies and regulatory support for more energy efficiency, renewable energy and infrastructure renewal projects. He is also the president of Love Energy Consultants Inc. Love was a co-founder of EnerQuality Corporation, created to deliver the R-2000 and Energy Star New Homes programs, and started his career with the Pollution Probe team that developed the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Dr. Jose Etcheverry is assistant professor at the Faculty of Environmental Studies of York University. He conducts research, graduate training and undergraduate teaching on renewable energy and is also the Co-Chair of the Sustainable Energy Initiative. Dr. Etcheverry is a member of the Chairmen Committee of the World Council for Renewable Energy, the Windfall Ecology Centre, REAP Canada, and he is the President of the Canadian Renewable Energy Alliance.
Ralph Torrie is Managing Director of the Trottier Energy Futures Project, a partnership between the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the David Suzuki Foundation, to begin building a low carbon, sustainable energy future for Canada. Over 30 years ago he developed the first comprehensive assessment of the potential for conservation and renewable energy in Ontario and he also produced the first low carbon scenario for Canada.
