2011 Fall Gatherings - Arrangements pending
Next Gathering 2012
Date: October 20th, 2012
Host: CFUW Milton and District.
Theme: Places to Grow
I was fortunate to attend this year’s Fall Gathering in London, Ontario. The theme was “Women On The Thames”. We were entertained by four speakers who were interesting, informative, stimulating and captivating.
Our first speaker was Anne Marie DeCicco-Best who successfully filled three terms as mayor of London. Although she lost the last election, her story of a woman in politics was indeed a revelation. Although she did many good works for London she felt that the general public noticed her hair style and colour above and beyond her accomplishments at City Hall. She likened her world during this time to living in a fish bowl.
Alison Konrad, a prestigious professor of Organizational Behaviour, alluded to the many similarities and differences in gender with respect to what is expected from a job today. Men seem to value money, prestige and their title while women seem to value flexible hours, helping others in their job and job satisfaction. A very entertaining study of how the public viewed male verses female bosses was also presented.
A gifted Radiologist, Roya Etemad-Rezai, gave a very interesting talk of the role of women in radiology from the 1800’s through to the end of the WWII. Indeed women were the pioneers in this field and showed unwavering courage during both World Wars taking portable x-ray machines to the front lines.
Our last speaker was Louise Fagan, a well-known producer, director and musician. She gave us a very lively review of her career in stage productions, recordings, film and television much of which was based on the narratives of women woven with music, movement and the spoken word.
The day was beautiful, the food delicious, the speakers though-provoking - what a recipe for a very great conference!

Inspire Focus Organize
CFUW Ontario North clubs were brought together in North Bay for their biennial Fall Gathering on
October 14 and 15. The host club, CFUW North Bay rolled out the red carpet to attendees from Thunder Bay to Orillia.
CFUW members were treated to a beautiful autumn welcoming reception at the home of President Gail Thomsen on the Friday night. Members met Ontario Council President Myra Willis, National President Brenda Wallace, National Treasurer Carol Hare and Charitable Trust Treasurer Lynn Franklin. The social evening provided members with an array of refreshments made by members of the host club. Gail’s home vibrated with the enthusiastic conversations among the twenty-seven guests.
The Programme Theme of Inspire, Focus, Organize began on the Saturday with a Panel discussion. Guest speakers, Nipissing University professor, Dr. Barbara Olmstead, community organizer Harriet Madigan and social justice activist Dr. Priscilla Solomon CSJ. were eloquent in sharing their reflections on the questions posed to them. Reflections that would motivate and inspire those present to make a difference in their own lives, in their community and in our organization
Keynote speaker, Scott Clark led CFUW members through an exercise on how to build our organization. Through discussion on building a Brand, we shared ideas on creating a legacy, on moving the organization forward and on the Ten Steps that could guide us to our goal.
The afternoon workshops on Strategic Planning, the Charitable Trust and the National Finances gave members lots of opportunity to gain CFUW training and knowledge. National President, Brenda Wallace brought greetings from the National Board and presented updates on national and international activities.
The Local Arrangement Committee, Chair Gail Thomsen and CFUW North Bay members are extended sincere appreciation for all of their work in preparing and hosting this special occasion. I would like to congratulate the LAC for their diligence to look after every detail, their amazing teamwork and the joyfulness felt throughout their meetings and weekend hosting. Gratitude is extended to the Ontario North CFUW for making this a successful event through their participation.
