SAFE SCHOOLS

The Ontario Government has released its report concerning the Safe Schools Review.  This can be found at www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/ssareview/report0626.pdf.

From the Ontario Council Pre-Budget Brief:

CFUW Ontario Council participated in the Safe Schools Act Review, both in Round Tables and with a Brief.  Some situations that were noted there also:

• lack of guidance counsellors
• lack of alternative programs for students who are misbehaving and require suspension or expulsion
• lack of ESL/ESD programs that lead to student frustration
• perceived discrimination with support services
• lack of technology training and/or home economics courses in the elementary school which in turn leads to lack of interest in these courses in the secondary school

We hope to see this change with the impact of targeted funding for 2005-2006.
